SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

PURPOSE

 

The purpose of the Scholarship Ministry of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church is to ensure
that our deserving high school graduates receive financial assistance in the pursuit of higher education through a college, university, or technical school program.

 

 
ELIGIBILITY

 

In order to be eligible to receive a scholarship from the PGMBC, applicants must meet each of the following requirements:
 
1.  Applicant must be a PGMBC member for a minimum of one year.  This means you must be a participant of one or more church ministries. 
 
2.  Applicant must be a high school senior who has been accepted to an accredited college,
     university or technical school.
 
3.  Applicant must have obtained a 2.5 grade point average in high school.
 
4.  Applicant must submit a written Application based on the criteria listed below along with a
    current transcript from his or her high school.
 
5. Awards to high school students are contingent upon the applicant’s timely submission of  proof of 
    enrollment at an accredited college, university, or technical school to the PGMBC Scholarship
    Ministry within 2 months of being selected as a scholarship recipient.     
 
CRITERIA
 
1.  A minimum of one-year tenure at PGMBC (unusual or extenuating circumstances will be taken
     into consideration by the committee).
 
2.  A minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.  (Note:  While grades are not always
     indicative of ability, good grades or steady improvement of grades over the course of high school
     suggest the student takes his/her education seriously.  Grades will be considered as a measure
     of the applicant’s interest and seriousness.)
 
3.  A completed application and all required components must be submitted by the posted deadline.
 
4.    Proof of enrollment must be submitted within 2 months of scholarship award acceptance.
 
 
 
 
REQUIRED COMPONENTS
 
1.  Official transcripts from high school listing grades and coursework.
 
2.  Extracurricular Activities:  Listing of activities and organizations in which applicant has
     participated.  Include positions held, contributions made, and dates of participation. 
 
3. Church Activities:  Listing of activities and organizations in which applicant has participated. 
    Include positions held, contributions made, and dates of participation. 
 
4. Community Service:  Listing of community service activities, including community services 
    through Church programs such as, but not limited to, A Light of Hope Community Outreach 
    Ministry at PGMBC.  Describe level of involvement.
 
5.  Essay:  A 250 word essay on either of the following topics:
     a)    How advanced training will contribute to my role as a Christian leader.
     b)    How the PGMBC ministries and programs have contributed to my sense of self
            or personal growth as a Christian leader.
 
6.  Two letters of reference from any of the following: a teacher, counselor, employer, community
      leader or an adult familiar with the applicant’s service and participation in the PGMBC
      community.
 
7.  Completed Application form.
 
8.  Proof of enrollment at a college, university, or technical school within 2 months of being
     selected as a scholarship recipient.

 

 
Deadline:  Application and all required components must be submitted by May 31, 2009.   
The application is online at www.pleasantgrovechurch.org .  All mail should be addressed as follows:
Attn:  Scholarship Ministry, Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 566 Whitlock Avenue, Marietta, GA 30064. Documents sent separately from the application itself should include your name in the Attention line. 
There is also a mailbox in Room 104 (the Choir Room) with a slot for the Scholarship Ministry.

 

 

Decision by the Scholarship Committee is final, and all applicants will be notified prior to the award ceremony.
